Whirligig of Time

In Twelfth Night, time spins like a whirligig - messy, unpredictable, and deeply human. Viola’s grief over her presumed-dead brother Sebastian stretches and contracts her perception of the world: moments of loneliness feel endless, while opportunities for disguise and connection fly by in a blur. Shakespeare captures the non-linear rhythm of longing, loss, and discovery, showing how identity, love, and grief can bend and warp with each twist of fate. We even see Olivia swept up in it as she navigates both loss and love.

Elagabalus

North Hertfordshire Museum will now use she/her pronouns for Roman emperor Elagabalus, following historical texts suggesting she identified as a woman. The museum consulted LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall to make its displays inclusive.

BEAUTY

Every wonder what early modern dating was like?

Who had the power?

The beauty of women allowed them to hold power over men. "Beauty, in early modern Europe, was more than skin-deep. It was a physical reflection of an individual’s health, morality, and state of being"
